The FEDERICA project is organising a Launch Event on 24 November 2008 (15.00-20.30) that will take place in the Hotel de la Cite Concorde, Lyon, France. This is the day before ICT 2008, which will be held on 25-27 November 2008, whilst the 6th e-Infrastructure Concertation Meeting is being held earlier in the day on the 24th.
The Launch Event will feature speakers from the FEDERICA project and the European Commission, starting from 18.30. This will be followed by a cocktail reception until 20.30.
From 15.00 onwards, there will also be a walk-in exhibition of the FEDERICA project, featuring demonstrations. Project participants will be on hand to answer any questions or queries during this time. The event has the aim of presenting the FEDERICA developments, which include a scalable European-wide 'technology agnostic' infrastructure based on the GÉANT2 and NREN networks. This can be used to host experimental activities on new Internet architectures and protocols, and the FEDERICA project is now looking for researchers and developers interested in utilising and helping test this facility.
A unique aspect of the project is the implementation of virtualisation techniques in conjunction with the network control mechanisms. These permits physical resources such as circuits, interfaces, routers and computing nodes to be "sliced" and allocated amongst multiple users, whilst granting each user varying degrees of control over their resources.
The concept of running virtual overlay networks (e.g. VPNs) is well established, but FEDERICA aims to extend this down to a lower level in order to allow specific parts of the physical substrate to be allocated as virtual resources. Such sets of resources are known as 'slices' and can be allocated to users for varying periods as required.
The FEDERICA Launch Event will be held in the Renzo-Piano Room, Hotel de la Cite Concorde, 22 Quai Charles de Gaulle, Lyon, France. This is conveniently located for the Centre de Congrès de Lyon where ICT 2008 is being held.
